Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
