European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
